ADRA Norway (Adventist Development and Relief Agency) was established as a foundation in April 1993 by the Seventh-day Adventist Church in Norway. Our work builds on a long tradition of social welfare work done by the church members for more than 80 years. There has been a shift from handouts and charity to long term and sustainable development done in partnership with the local communities themselves. Even for emergency management, a longer term perspective is applied.
ADRA Norway is part of the international ADRA network that works in 120 countries around the world. ADRA is an independent, humanitarian agency and network established by the Seventh-day Adventist Church with the specific purpose of individual and community development and disaster relief. Established in 1956, ADRA provides sustainable community development and disaster relief without regard to political or religious association, age, gender, race or ethnicity.
ADRA Norway will facilitate for change and development through a) strengthening the competence and capacity of partner organizations, b) providing opportunities for people to reach their potential and c) enhancing mutual learning and change processes. We work to promote gender equality and peace and reconciliation in the areas of education, health, food security, water and sanitation and provide emergency relief when conflicts and disasters happen. Our main implementing partners for long term development are ADRA in Peru, Sudan, Ethiopia, Somalia, Myanmar, Thailand and Cambodia. In addition to private donations, ADRA Norway also receives funding from Norad and the Norwegian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
ADRA Norway strives to keep the administrative costs to 10 percent or less. We have a network of around 1700 volunteers that help out in the annual appeal called “Hjelpeaksjonen” which runs in the autumn.
